Mayor Spano, lets find a better solution for the homeless situation (Part 1)

Mayor Spano, you are a Mayor of the People NOT of some of the People.
For the last 3 nights Yonkers Police/Fire and Building Dept have made nightly midnight raids on Yonkers ONLY two emergency overnight homeless shelters. The two overnight-only SHELTERS run by the Sharing Community, shelter around 90 people per night. The shelters include one at St John’s Church, which has sheltered the homeless since it co-founded the Sharing Community in 1993.
Last night (9/24/16) the Yonkers Police/Fire Officials forced the Shelter at St John’s Church to turn away dozens of homeless people into the rainy night.
Mayor Spano: If you want those folks out of the Shelter than offer them another place to go. Putting them on the Street is not a solution.

Recent History:
1) Wednesday night Police/Fire and Building Dept came to 101 North Broadway at midnight and rousted the 50 homeless people sheltering there to do a head count and facility inspection.
Thursday night they returned at midnight and told everyone to get out. Shelter staff begged for a time and the City representatives said that they could stay until the morning. Friday the County got a temporary restraining order until Monday afternoon. Friday night the Yonkers Police/Fire and Building Dept returned at midnight to force everyone out but left after being told of the Court Order. They soon returned after being ordered by the City Hall to roust everyone for a head count.

2) St John’s Church (1 Hudson St): Wednesday night Yonkers Police/Fire and Building Dept came at midnight and rousted the 40 homeless people sheltering there to do a head count and facility inspection. Thursday night they returned at midnight to roust everyone for another head count. Friday they told the Sharing Community that they were only allowed to have 13 24-Hour shelter beds there. Friday night Yonkers Police/Fire vehicle with lights blazing arrived around 6:00pm to seal the building and ensure that no more than 13 homeless people entered the building. All entrances were blocked and the Priest was warned to allow NO sanctuary anywhere in the Church. Dozen of homeless people were turned away in the rain.
