Ref: Lorenzo Johnson’s 1st Interview since his release from Prison

On December 15, 1995, Tarajay Williams was murdered by a shotgun blast to the chest in an alley in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Yonkers native, Lorenzo Johnson was initially accused only of being near the alley where the murder occurred. But shortly afterwards, the charges were upped to first degree murder and he was found guilty.

Johnson was sentenced at the age of 22 to mandatory life imprisonment.

But,after years of appeals, the court found an absence of evidence, and despite opposition from the PA Attorney General, there was a district court hearing on Johnson’s request to be released.

On January 28, 2012, Lorenzo Johnson was freed. However, the story did not end there. One month later, the PA AG filed a petition to overturn the appeals court’s decision. In March 2012, the Supreme Court reversed this decision and reinstated Johnson’s convictions. He was sent back to prison.

But fate intervened yet again. This time, in Johnson’s favor. In July 2017, Johnson entered a plea of no contest to the murder of Tarajay Williams. According to Johnson, “It was a bitter pill to swallow.” In return for vacating Johnson’s original first-degree murder conviction and life prison term, a judge accepted Johnson’s no contest plea to charges of third-degree murder and conspiracy for the slaying of Tarajay Williams.

Johnson was finally free at last. He has returned home to Yonkers where he has reunited with his family.
