” POLICE COMMISSIONER CHARLES GARDNER ANNOUNCES ARREST OF HOMICIDE SUSPECT.
Today Police Commissioner Charles Gardner was joined by Mayor Mike Spano and members of the Detective Division to announce the arrest of suspect Dontae Degree, a 29 year old resident of Elmsford. The suspect was arraigned yesterday in Yonkers Criminal Court for Murder 2nd degree in relation to a homicide which occurred on 08-25-15 on Morningside Avenue. The crime involved a shooting which resulted in the death of Kenny Hill and serious physical injuries to another adult male. Both victims were sitting inside of a vehicle when shots were fired from the suspect.
An intensive investigation began by members of the Yonkers Police Detective Division immediately following this incident. Early on in this investigation it was apparent to investigators that this was not a random incident of street violence and the victims were targeted. Detectives used video surveillance from both private and public entities, license plate readers (LPR’s), and cell phone records during this lengthy investigation. The suspect and a vehicle used by the suspect were subsequently identified by Yonkers Detectives.
On 10-19-15 at approximately 8:30 a.m., Yonkers Detectives located suspect Dontae Degree in Mount Vernon and he was taken into custody without incident and booked for Murder 2nd degree. Police Commissioner Gardner commented “As a result of excellent investigative efforts by members of our Detective Division, we were able to confirm that this was not a random act of street violence. Due to their diligent work, we were able to remove a dangerous individual from our streets.” Commissioner Gardner also thanked the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, in particular the Westchester County Intelligence Center, for their assistance in this investigation. The suspect is currently in custody at the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla. ”
