YONKERS, NY – December 19, 2017 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced he is appointing local community member Shanae Williams to the Yonkers City Council representing the First District. Williams will replace current Councilmember Christopher Johnson, who is vacating the seat after recently being elected to the Westchester County Board of Legislators. Williams will be sworn into office on January 1, 2018.

“I am very proud today to appoint Shanae Williams as the Yonkers City Council’s newest member,” said Mayor Spano. “Shanae brings a fresh and unique perspective to the Council as she has been very active in her community starting at a young age and so has a solid understanding of the District’s needs and challenges. I believe Shanae’s desire to enact positive change and be a progressive voice for her District will serve the Council and her constituents well.”

Shanae Williams, 28, joins the Yonkers City Council while also working as a Multifamily Account Executive for Altice USA. Previously, Williams served as the Executive Assistant to Mayor Spano and as a Business Administrator in the New York State Assembly. Born in Jamaica and immigrated to Yonkers as a child, Williams attended Yonkers Public Schools and has been a resident of First Council District for over 15 years. Williams is an active member of the Hudson River Community Association, NAACP, Westchester Black Women Political Caucus, Westchester Young Democrats, Aquehung Women’s Democratic Club, is a former board member of the Municipal Housing Authority of the City of Yonkers and served as the liaison to Mayor Spano’s African American Advisory Board. Williams holds a Bachelor of Science from the State University of New York, Albany and Master of Business Administration and Leadership from Walden University.

Shanae Williams stated, “I would like to thank Mayor Spano for giving me the opportunity to serve my community. I look forward to working with the Administration, the City Council, and the residents of the First District towards creating a better future for the City of Yonkers. There is much to be done in the District and I intend to work hard to pass meaningful legislation that improves the quality of life for my constituents.”

Christopher Johnson, Yonkers Councilmember, First District, said, “I support the Mayor’s appointment of Shanae Williams to represent the First District on the Yonkers City Council.  Yonkers will continue to be well served, as she will prove herself to be one who is committed to the community and has a true passion for the people.  I look forward to working with Ms. Williams and partnering with her from the Westchester County Legislature.”

Mayor Spano’s appointment follows stipulations as stated in the Yonkers City Charter which states the mayor appoints vacated City Council seats. Williams will hold the office and will run as an incumbent to the seat in an upcoming special election to fill the remainder of the unexpired term of office.
